American Eagle Airlines, the regional affiliate of American Airlines, will soon begin First Class service on all of its CRJ-700 jets. With the introduction of nine First Class seats, Eagle will offer customers a premium product with the same level of outstanding service customers experience on American Airlines, a founding member of the oneworld® Alliance. On flights of shorter duration, beverage service will be accompanied by a gourmet snack mix.

"We're pleased to introduce First Class service on our CRJ-700 aircraft," said Peter Bowler, President and CEO of American Eagle. "By July we will have our fleet of 25 CRJs converted by American Eagle mechanics to the new First Class and main cabin design, and we will have taken delivery of the first two of our 22 new CRJs that will also feature First Class comfort and amenities."

American Eagle will offer First Class service from its Chicago and Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) hubs.
Millions of travelers will take to the skies this season to celebrate the holidays with family and friends. Whether you're hitting the slopes, visiting relatives or simply getting away from the hustle and bustle, American Airlines, a founding member of the global oneworld® Alliance, is offering holiday travel tips with the family in mind.

Before Traveling...

In accordance with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Secure Flight program, customers who purchased tickets on or after Sept. 15 will be asked to provide additional information as part of the Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD) requirements. AAdvantage®( )members are strongly encouraged to update their accounts with their SFPD by logging into their account on AA.com and clicking the "Contact Information and Password" tab at the top of the screen. For additional information, please visit www.aa.com/secureflight or www.tsa.gov/secureflight.

When traveling on an international itinerary with a lap child (infants under the age of two), contact American Airlines Reservations prior to departure at 1-800-433-7300 (en Espanol 1-800-633-3711) for information on the proper documentation required for security clearance and boarding. Infant ticket and fare rules for international destinations, including Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, vary by country, so call ahead to avoid surprises at the airport. Although there is no charge for traveling with lap children within the U.S., allow for extra time at the airport to provide proper documentation to a ticket agent.

Consider purchasing a lightweight child-restraint system for use inflight and ease your way through security. The system is easily transportable and fits almost all American and American Eagle seats. See www.aa.com/children for more information.

Some countries require a child traveling with only one parent to carry written, notarized consent from the absent parent. Contact the embassy or consulate of your destination country for information.

As You Pack...

Domestic Economy Class customers can check one bag for $20, and a second checked bag is $30. If you've achieved AAdvantage Gold®, Platinum®, or Executive Platinum® status, the first two checked bags are free, provided the bags are within the current weight and size limitations. See www.aa.com/baggageinfo for information, as other exceptions apply.

Include your name, flight number, itinerary and phone contact inside each checked bag in case the bag tag becomes detached in transit.

When traveling with an infant, be sure to bring enough food and supplies with you. American does not provide baby food, bottles or other related items. However, baby bottles can be heated on all flights operated by American Airlines. American Eagle and AmericanConnection flights are not equipped to heat baby bottles.

For young children, fill a backpack with crayons, coloring books, inexpensive toys and snacks. Consider holding a new or special item aside until you are airborne.

Place all prescription medicine, jewelry, documents, car keys and other valuables in a carry-on bag that will fit under the seat in front of you. That way, if overhead bin space happens to be full, you won't have to check your bag with valuables at the gate.

Before Leaving for the Airport...

Dress yourself and your children in comfortable clothes, and wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off at the security checkpoint.

Save time by checking in online. Visit www.aa.com/checkin up to 24 hours prior to flight to check in for your flight and print your boarding pass.

If you're over the age of 18, federal law requires you to show a government-issued photo ID at TSA checkpoints. See www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/acceptable_documents for examples of TSA acceptable IDs. If you're traveling internationally, don't forget your passport, as well as other important documents for all customers, including lap children. Make copies to carry with you (or scan and e-mail a copy to yourself) and leave with others at home.

At the Airport...

TSA limits the amount of liquids, gels and aerosols you may carry on board. However, medication, baby formula and food, breast milk, and juice are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in a zip-top bag. Families should declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint. For more information, including limitations on international travel, visit our carry-on baggage page. TSA's Web site, www.tsa.gov, is also a good source of information.

Looking for airport information, destination guides or ticket counter hours? Visit www.aa.com/airporthelp to find this and other useful information to help you breeze through the airport.

Customers may carry onboard one bag that fits in the overhead bin or under the seat, plus one personal item, such as a purse, briefcase or laptop. A diaper bag and umbrella stroller (as long as they fit in the overhead bin) for a lap or ticketed child are permitted onboard in addition to the standard carry-on allowance. Additionally, an approved safety seat and collapsible stroller may be checked at no charge. Don't forget to label seats and strollers with your name and contact phone number.

Allow extra time for traffic, parking and transportation to the terminal. Travelers should plan to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before departure for domestic flights and two to three hours prior to departure for international flights. Some cities have even earlier suggested arrival times because of lengthy TSA security checkpoint lines. See www.aa.com/airportexpectations for cities where earlier arrival is recommended.

Instead of trying to remember your parking location or writing it down on a scrap of paper, take a picture of your location sign with a camera phone or digital camera.

If you haven't already checked in beforehand at AA.com, try one of American's quick and easy Self-Service Check-in machines. They're a great time-saver and can be used for both domestic and international flights. You can print a boarding pass, check luggage, select or change seats, confirm flight changes, and purchase upgrades.

Curbside Check-in is another great time saver. You can check your bag with a skycap at the curb, and then it's a straight shot to the security line and your gate.

While You're Waiting...

Visit an Admirals Club® lounge. Select locations in Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York offer children's rooms equipped with computers that have "kid-friendly" games and programs, as well as a TV featuring age-appropriate programming. One-Day passes are available for $50, and can be purchased in person, online, or at Self-Service Check-in machines.

American and American Eagle typically begin boarding aircraft about 30 minutes before flight time for domestic flights (45 minutes for international flights) in order to help ensure an on-time departure.

Onboard the Plane...

A portable video player, audio player, or reading material can make the time fly, especially for young travelers. However, audio and video equipment may only be used with headsets.

When traveling on an aircraft with Gogo inflight Internet, take advantage of the opportunity to visit AA.com for free. Take care of last minute e-shopping, check e-mail and stay connected with your friends and family.

Changes in cabin air pressure during descent may cause discomfort in small children. Be prepared by having a bottle, pacifier or chewing gum with you. Frequent swallowing allows air to flow freely out of and into the ear and sinus cavities, preventing discomfort.

American and American Eagle offer complimentary non-alcoholic beverages onboard, and juice and milk are available for children. In addition, American offers a choice of fresh light meals and snacks through the food-for-sale program. Options vary based on flight time and length.

Families traveling with a child who is a first-time flyer can commemorate their first time in the sky with American's new "First Flight Certificate." Ask a flight attendant onboard any American Airlines flight for the keepsake signed by the aircraft's pilots and flight attendants.

Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) today announced a major increase in the effectiveness of its recycling programs after the company put special emphasis on recycling projects in support of its ongoing commitment to the environment.

As the United States prepares to observe "America Recycles Day" on Sunday, Continental said that so far in 2009, it has collected more than 4 million pounds of mixed recyclables from terminal operations at its Houston Bush Intercontinental, New York/Newark Liberty and Cleveland Hopkins hubs - an 800 percent year-over-year increase. Mixed recyclables include newspapers, cans, and plastic bottles contributed by co-workers and customers via designated "EcoSkies" recycling bins in hub airport terminals.

"While Continental has had a robust recycling program for more than a decade, we have made substantial enhancements to the program throughout 2008 and 2009, increasing recycling onboard our aircraft, at our airport terminals and at other supporting facilities, like our food service kitchens," said Leah Raney, Continental's managing director of global environmental affairs. "We have had strong encouragement and support from our co-workers and customers, and we are excited to see such great results from our expanded recycling program."

In 2008, Continental's expanded inflight and flight kitchen recycling efforts resulted in the recovery of more than 462 tons pounds of plastic and aluminum, and more than 1,300 tons of cardboard. So far in 2009, Continental has more than doubled that amount, recovering more than 1,500 tons of plastic and aluminum, and more than 30,000 tons of cardboard.

Continental also works with contract caterers at the non-hub airports it serves to encourage recycling; today, more than 91 percent of Continental's domestic caterers and more than 87 percent of its international caterers recycle.

Due to Continental's focus on increasing its recycling efforts in 2009 alone, Continental has:

Recycled enough aluminum to build 20 Boeing 777 airplanes

Saved more than 584,300 trees

Saved enough water to meet the monthly freshwater needs of 106,900 homes

Saved enough energy to heat and cool more than 49,600 homes

Reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 35,208 metric tons

Reduced carbon footprint to landfills by saving 116,900 cubic yards of waste

Proceeds from Continental's recycling program are re-invested in the program or donated to We Care, a nonprofit charity organization that provides financial assistance to Continental employees in need.

Continental has been an airline industry leader in environmental responsibility for more than a decade, with a dedicated team of environmental professionals who work to review and mitigate the airline's environmental impact in every aspect of its business. Continental's expanding recycling program is one of numerous environmental initiatives that the company has undertaken in the past several years. The airline also partnered with Boeing, GE Aviation/CFM International, and Honeywell's UOP to perform the first biofuel demonstration flight by a commercial carrier in North America. Continental, which is 38 percent more fuel efficient than it was in 1997 per revenue passenger mile, has undertaken comprehensive efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its ground fleet by testing alternative energy sources, and offers customers a carbon offset program, offered through nonprofit Sustainable Travel International.

Orbitz Insider's Top Five Tips to Save You Time at the Airport this Holiday

Choose alternate airports: If you haven't booked your Thanksgiving travel -- or if you're looking ahead to Christmas or New Year's -- consider using alternative smaller airports. These are often much easier to navigate and less crowded. For example, if you're traveling to Chicago, consider Chicago Midway (MDW); New York-bound travelers may have better luck with crowds at the White Plains Westchester County Airport (HPN); and those heading into or out of Los Angeles may save time by going through Burbank (BUR) or Orange County (SNA).

Flexibility is key: If your travel plans are flexible, investigate flying on days that Orbitz predicts will be less busy during the Thanksgiving period. The best bet would be to depart on Nov. 23, 2009 and return on Nov. 30, 2009.

Online check-in is your friend: Where possible take advantage of online check-in and print boarding passes before arriving at the airport.

Know your flight status: Always check the status of your flight before leaving for the airport. Orbitz bookers can choose to get flight status updates sent to their PDAs or mobile phones, while they're on the go. Plus, they can choose to send their alerts to 6 others, including those picking them up at the airport.

Security smarts: Keep anything you need to show airport security such as ID, boarding passes, liquids in a zip-top bag, or medication, in a separate compartment of your carry-on bag. Digging for these items once you get to the front of the security line will cause delays and certainly not make you any friends.

American Airlines is pleased to help customers "free their memory" with a promotion aimed at introducing travelers to the new AA.com Notification Center.

Running now through Jan. 5, 2010, the "Free Your Memory" sweepstakes offers a chance to win one of 60 BlackBerry® Curve(TM) 8900 smartphones, one of which comes with 300,000 AAdvantage® miles. Anyone can register to win by simply playing the interactive memory game at www.aa.com/promo.

The AA.com Notification Center, launched in 2009, is accessible from each customer's My Account section on AA.com, where customers can simplify their travel experience with American Airlines. The center enables customers to set their flight status notification preferences just one time and then automatically receive messages for all their future flights, as long as their AAdvantage number is included in their flight reservation. When setting up a profile, customers choose how they would like American to notify them - by phone, text message or e-mail. The AA.com Notification Center also makes sharing these updates easier by allowing AAdvantage members to save up to 10 contacts in their profile. American then will automatically provide the member, and the member's selected contacts, with desired flight information.

American Airlines and Lexus are kicking off the season of giving early with a free Wi-Fi inflight promotion for customers traveling on American Airlines.

Beginning Nov. 1 and running through Nov. 7, American customers traveling on Wi-Fi equipped aircraft can enjoy free Wi-Fi service, compliments of Lexus allowing travelers to stay connected while thousands of feet in the sky. The Gogo Inflight Internet service lets customers connect to work or home by offering access to e-mail, social media sites, e-shopping or the latest news and sports headlines from their laptops, smartphones and handheld PDAs.

"American and Lexus want to give customers a little something special this fall by offering free Wi-Fi," said John Tiliacos, American's Managing Director - Onboard Products. "We continue to focus on improving the customer's experience and with this special offer, we hope our customers enjoy this opportunity to connect inflight for work or fun as the busy holiday season kicks into gear."

To coincide with the introduction of the new 2010 Lexus LS line, American Airlines passengers can take advantage of the free Wi-Fi promotion by entering the promotion code 2010LEXUSLS to connect to the service. More details about Wi-Fi on American are available at www.aa.com/wifi.

An innovator in airline travel, American was the first U.S. carrier to launch onboard broadband Wi-Fi in August 2008, and the service is currently available to thousands of customers traveling on American's Boeing 767-200 aircraft and select MD-80 aircraft.

Gogo, powered by Aircell, turns a commercial airplane into a Wi-Fi hotspot with true inflight Internet access. Passengers with Wi-Fi enabled devices, such as laptops, smartphones and PDAs, can surf the Web, check e-mail, instant message, access a corporate VPN and more. SmarterTravel®, the largest online travel resource of independent expert advice for the budget-conscious traveler, today announced the results of its annual Readers' Choice Awards, a survey of more than 7,400 travelers, the majority of whom fly four to six times a year. Of no surprise is that value continues to win with travelers and price is deemed the most influential factor in determining airfare purchases.

Southwest swept several major categories including: Best Airfare Prices, Favorite Domestic Airline, and Best on Time Service, among others. JetBlue also got top marks while legacy carriers continue to lose their luster, in most part for adding fees. When asked which airline fees are the greatest gouge, readers responded:

Fees to check a bag (overwhelming at 62%)

Ticket changing fees (19.3%)

Booking online vs. in-person (7%)

Fees for overweight checked bags (4.4%)

Fees for snacks (4.3%)

"The story this year is really all about the fees and the fact that legacy carriers need to take a lesson from the low cost providers," said Anne Banas, executive editor of SmarterTravel. "We have overwhelmingly received input from our readers that fees are driving purchase decisions, so no surprise that Southwest wins favoritism with no checked bag fees. However, Southwest has spent the better part of a year cementing itself in the minds of travelers as the no-fee carrier and repeatedly skewering competitors in the media, but what travelers don't realize is they are quietly adding fees."

Perception vs. Reality

Some of Southwest's latest additional fees include a $75 in-cabin pet fee, $25 (each way) service charge for children ages 5 -11 traveling alone, $50 fee for 3rd checked bag (up from $25) and $10 for "priority boarding. Additionally, the airline is strongly hinting that its Rapid Rewards program will become more fee-based in 2010

http://www.smartertravel.com/blogs/up-front-with-tim-winship/southwest-targets-frequent-flyers-wallets.html?id=3711677

Sign of the Times - Freebies Now a Luxury

Yes, that's right, free snacks and no checked bag fees is now a luxury. When asked who has the best prices, Southwest's (35.8%) and Jet Blue's (9.5%) refusal to add on extra fees for a first-checked bag (Southwest also doesn't charge for a second bag) or in-flight snacks, which can pad the cost of an airline ticket, earned them high marks.

Legacy Carriers get an "F"

When it comes to price, customer service, on-time performance, onboard amenities, and baggage service, US Airways earned the honors of being the worst airline, followed by United, American and Delta. What would make them better? Here's our readers advice:

Mandatory distribution of hotel vouchers for stranded passengers when airline is at fault (34.8%)

A 3-hour maximum wait on the tarmac (32.5%)

Universal enforcement of carry-on bags (21%)

Creation of a kids-only/family-only airplane section (6.1%)

Get out your Hazmat Suit

With a potentially nasty flu season ahead, readers overwhelmingly felt that US Airways' cabins were the dirtiest. Others who need a visit from Mr. Clean include United and American. Legacy airlines have a lot of work to do to catch up to the standards set by the low-fare carriers, particularly in regard to in-flight experiences that are clean and neat.

More winners from the 2009 SmarterTravel Readers' Choice Awards include:

Most Comfortable Standard Economy Class Section

Winner: Southwest

Second Place: JetBlue

Honorable Mention: American

Most Child-Friendly Airline

Winner: Southwest

Best Value Frequent Flyer Program

Winner: Southwest

Second Place: American

Honorable Mention: Delta

Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) today announced at its annual Media Day a "green plane," an innovative idea that marries efficiency, environmentally responsible products, Customer comfort, and reduced waste and weight. This plane, a Boeing 737-700, will serve as a test environment for new environmentally responsible materials and Customer comfort products.

It is a flying testament to the airline's philosophy that environmental decisions make good business sense. All of the initiatives being tested on this Green Plane, when combined, will equate to a weight savings of almost five pounds per seat, thus saving fuel and reducing emissions, along with adding recyclable elements to the cabin interior and reducing waste.

"Southwest is committed to continuing to lead the industry in emissions reductions through fuel efficiency. Efficiency in fuel consumption benefits our Company as well as the environment, and this has been part of our business model since the beginning," said Gary Kelly, Southwest's Chairman, President, and CEO. "As we look to the future, we know climate change remains of vital importance to our industry, our Company, and our Customers, so Southwest works hard every day in every area to be a responsible steward of the environment."

Southwest has designated one aircraft to serve as a test for eco-friendly products, which include:

InterfaceFLOR Carpet - this carpet reduces labor and material costs because it is installed in sections, thus eliminating the need for total replacement of areas such as aisles, where Southwest currently uses one single piece of carpet. The 100 percent recyclable carpet is returned to the manufacturer at the end of its service life and completely re-manufactured into new carpet; the process is completely carbon neutral.

Seat covers - two new products that will be tested on the aircraft seats, offering more than twice the durability than the current leather seats as well as a weight savings of almost two pounds per seat.

On one side of the aisle, e-Leather is an eco-friendly, lightweight and scuff resistant man-made alternative to traditional leather. It is made from recycled materials that have been discarded by the leather industry. It is then upgraded utilizing eco-friendly technology, resulting in composition leather, a man-made material.

On the other side of the aisle, IZIT Leather, a new breed of premium leather alternative, is an evolutionary step beyond calf skin that offers a lightweight product that is both economical and durable, but with the genuine appearance and touch of luxurious leather.

Life Vest Pouch - more environmentally friendly because it offers a weight savings of one pound per passenger, replacing the current metal container with lighter durable canvas. The smaller pouch also creates more room under the seat for carryon items and offers productivity improvements due to design change.

Foam Fill - A lighter weight fill from Garnier PURtec in the back of the seats that reduces weight while providing increased Customer comfort.

Passenger Seat Rub Strips - switching from plastic to aluminum will help with durability, which reduces waste, as well as being recyclable.

"Southwest is proud to lead the aviation industry in environmental stewardship and honored to be working with these eco-friendly vendors and our partners at Boeing," Kelly says. "We are excited to test their forward-thinking products and expect these green products to not only help the environment, but also create a fuel and materials cost saving for Southwest."

In addition to the green plane, Southwest also announced the Nov. 1 kickoff of its more robust onboard recycling program, which is a co-mingled system that will allow the airline to capture more recyclable material and divert it from the waste stream. This 18-month process involved team work from all areas of the Company to implement the program on the ground at its Provisioning Bases and re-working of waste collection procedures in the cabin.

"The initiative by the Southwest Airlines Green Team, Facilities Maintenance, Inflight Department, and Provisioning Department was a truly heroic effort; when you serve nearly 68 cities there are often 68 different ways to implement a program," Kelly says. "We appreciate the hard work of our recycling vendor, Republic Services, and we are excited to take a very effective recycling program and make it even better."

Environmental Stewardship is a responsibility Southwest takes seriously, and efficient operations are the hallmark of our Company and the foundation of our environmental commitment. Over the decades, Southwest has been at the forefront of such efficiencies as paperless tickets, quick turnarounds, installation of winglets, and, more recently; the installation of fleet-wide advanced avionics. This focus on efficiency not only makes good business sense, it is the right thing to do.
Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) today announced a series of schedule enhancements to strengthen its international network for summer 2010. The changes - which will expand service for customers in 17 cities - leverage Delta's industry-leading joint venture with Air France-KLM, growing alliance relationship with Alaska Air Group and increased fleet flexibility gained from its merger with Northwest.

"No other airline has the alliance partners, fleet flexibility or network breadth to consistently deliver new routes for customers while at the same time being responsible in managing capacity in the face of a global economic recession," said Glen Hauenstein, Delta's executive vice president - Network Planning and Revenue Management. "As America's flag carrier to the world, Delta's 2010 schedule will bring new nonstop service to dozens of communities around the globe, thanks to the strength of our worldwide alliances."

Delta's 2010 changes are part of the first fully consolidated schedule published following Delta's merger with Northwest, allowing the airline to reallocate existing capacity to new routes. Delta also will maintain many of the international route reductions it announced in June in response to decreased global demand.

Delta's new and expanded nonstop routes for summer 2010 will be focused in three regions: Trans-Pacific, trans-Atlantic and Africa.

    Region Route Effective* Aircraft Frequency

Trans-Pacific

By June 2010, Delta will add new nonstop routes from its primary U.S.-to-Asia gateways in Detroit and Seattle and realign flights at its Tokyo-Narita hub to better match capacity to demand.

From Detroit, Delta will introduce new nonstop service to Seoul-Incheon and Hong Kong and expand service between Detroit and Shanghai. Delta has continued to position Detroit as a major gateway to Asia thanks to its strategic geographic position for millions of customers who travel between the U.S. East Coast and Asia. Detroit offers customers 477 peak-day departures to more than 130 nonstop destinations.

At Seattle, Delta's Asian expansion is powered by its partnership with Alaska Air Group. New nonstop flights from Seattle to Beijing and Osaka will be timed for convenient connections with Delta and Alaska's 267 combined daily departures to 64 destinations from Seattle/Tacoma, and will complement Delta's existing daily service to Tokyo-Narita. Delta and Alaska offer customers reciprocal codeshare, lounge and frequent flyer benefits to make it easier to connect between the airlines' domestic and international networks at Seattle.

At Tokyo-Narita Delta will resume seasonal nonstop service between Tokyo and Salt Lake City (operating five times weekly); resume three weekly summer flights between Tokyo and Atlanta to complement daily year-round service; expand capacity between Tokyo and New York-JFK with the upgrade of Boeing 777-200 to 747-400 aircraft; and expand service between Tokyo and Los Angeles with four additional weekly 777-200 flights to complement daily year-round service. With these changes, Delta will offer Narita customers more than 25 daily departures to more than 20 nonstop destinations.

"Delta is committed to providing customers with convenient options between the most popular business and leisure destinations across Asia and our global network, connecting Asia to more points in the U.S. and beyond than any U.S. carrier," Hauenstein said. "Since Delta's first flight to Asia in 1987, we have become the region's premier U.S. airline through organic growth and our merger with Northwest. Delta's tailored customer experience on our more than 500 weekly flights throughout Asia includes regional foods and in-flight service representatives who provide language translations."

Trans-Atlantic Joint Venture

By June 2010, the Delta-Air France-KLM joint venture will reintroduce seasonal service on more than a dozen trans-Atlantic routes and will launch new nonstop service between New York-JFK and Copenhagen, Denmark and Stockholm, Sweden. Seasonal reintroductions include additional daily flights between joint venture hubs and added service to meet seasonal demand on routes such as Atlanta to Athens; Atlanta to Venice; New York-JFK to Zurich; and Detroit to Rome. (A complete list of Delta's summer 2010 seasonal service is available at http://news.delta.com/index.php?DB=mr4enh_delta&s=11.)

Delta's new service between JFK and Copenhagen will be the only nonstop flight between the two cities, filling a gap to the largest travel market from JFK without nonstop service. Stockholm, which is among the largest travel markets to and from New York, also will benefit from its only nonstop service to JFK.

In total, the Delta-Air France-KLM joint venture will offer the industry's leading trans-Atlantic flight schedule for summer 2010 with approximately 25 percent of the total trans-Atlantic market.

"By integrating our trans-Atlantic operations, Air France, KLM and Delta give passengers what they wish: More choice, more frequencies, more convenient flight schedules and better customer services. By optimizing the use of our pooled resources, this joint venture helps us weather the current economic situation and protect our product offering," said Bruno Matheu, executive vice president - Marketing, Revenue Management and Network, Air France-KLM.

Since beginning a dramatic restructuring of its international network in 2005, Delta has grown from approximately 45 daily round-trip U.S. to Europe flights in summer 2005 to more than 100 daily flights scheduled by the Delta-Air France-KLM joint venture for summer 2010. Each new route capitalizes on the strength of the joint venture by allowing the three airlines to share costs and revenues and more effectively market the service to a broader base of customers.

Africa

Building on its position as the only U.S. carrier operating flights to Africa, Delta will continue its expansion into fast-growing African markets for summer 2010. The airline will complement existing JFK-Accra, Ghana service with new nonstop 767-300 flights from Atlanta, and will replace existing one-stop Boeing 757-200 service between Abuja, Nigeria and JFK with nonstop flights operated with Boeing 767-300 aircraft.

Delta intends to serve as many as 10 African destinations from the United States next summer, including flights to Malabo, Equatorial Guinea; Monrovia, Liberia; Nairobi, Kenya; and Luanda, Angola, each of which are pending U.S. and foreign government approvals. Delta has aircraft ready to serve each of these markets as soon as it receives the necessary approvals.

"Traffic between the United States and Africa is projected to grow more than 5 percent annually through 2027," Hauenstein said. "With demand for travel to Africa spread across the United States, Delta is uniquely positioned to continue to collect this growing base of traffic through the world's largest passenger hub in Atlanta, as well as via the top U.S. market in New York."

Delta's African expansion trims several hours off average travel times between the U.S. and Africa, a significant benefit for customers.

Customer experience

Customers on the new flights will have the opportunity to experience Delta's award-winning BusinessElite service, including innovative food offerings from celebrity chef Michelle Bernstein and original wine selections chosen by Delta's Master Sommelier Andrea Robinson. BusinessElite also features on-demand personal in-seat entertainment boasting more than 20 first-run and popular classic movies, a variety of TV programs, thousands of music titles and a suite of video games.

Routes operated with Delta's new Boeing 777-200LR aircraft offer BusinessElite customers a fully flat, six-foot, three-inch bed in a one-two-one configuration, which provides every customer with direct aisle access. With next summer's schedule, Delta's fleet of 777-200LR aircraft will be operated on its longest flights, including Atlanta to Dubai; Atlanta to Tel Aviv; Atlanta to Johannesburg; Los Angeles to Tokyo-Narita; Los Angeles to Sydney; and Detroit to Hong Kong. Summer 2010 will mark the first time the 777-200LR has flown in scheduled service from Tokyo-Narita with service to Atlanta and Los Angeles.
